# Consensus estimate

The consensus estimate is the average analyst forecast for a company's earnings or an economic number. Markets [price the consensus before the release](https://mochatrade.com/learn/start-here/how-to-read-us-market-news), so the move is the gap: in line moves little, a surprise moves [the stock](https://mochatrade.com/learn/us-market-structure/us-earnings-explained) or [the whole curve](https://mochatrade.com/learn/us-market-structure/us-inflation-explained).
