Index rebalancing is when an index changes members or weights and every fund tracking it must trade the difference, usually in [the closing auction on one announced day](https://mochatrade.com/learn/us-market-structure/how-us-stock-prices-form). These buyers are [forced, not choosing](https://mochatrade.com/learn/us-market-structure/who-moves-us-stocks), so the move usually comes before the date; [three companies joining the S&P 500 in September 2026](https://mochatrade.com/blog/mocha-markets-weekly-019) is a worked case.
