How a Quiet Chip Company Became a $2 Trillion AI Giant
The story behind Broadcom, the most important company most people never talk about.
In 2016, a dealmaker named Hock Tan pulled off one of the biggest chip deals ever. He bought a company more famous than his own, kept its name, and quietly built it into one of the most important companies in AI.
You use its chips every day without knowing it. Your phone, your wifi, the data centres behind every AI app you open.
The company is Broadcom. It is worth more than $2 trillion today, about ₹190 lakh crore. Most people still do not know the story behind it.
The man who bought his way in
There is no garage founder here.
Hock Tan ran a smaller chip company called Avago. In 2016 he bought the original Broadcom for $37 billion, about ₹3.5 lakh crore, and simply kept its better known name.
He is an operator and a dealmaker, not an inventor. He finds strong businesses, buys them, and runs them hard. That habit is the whole engine.
What it actually does
In simple terms, Broadcom makes the chips and the wiring that hold up almost every AI data centre. If Nvidia is the engine, Broadcom is a lot of the rest of the car.
Here is the part that drove the run. Nvidia sells one powerful chip to everyone. Broadcom does the opposite.
It helps Google, Meta and OpenAI build their own chips, made for their exact work. A custom chip can run cheaper and cooler than paying Nvidia’s margins on a general one. Broadcom also sells the wiring that links thousands of these chips together, so it earns on both.
The numbers that make you stare
AI revenue hit $10.8 billion in a single quarter, about ₹1 lakh crore, more than double a year earlier.
The company has pointed to more than $100 billion, roughly ₹9.5 lakh crore, in AI chip sales by 2027. The stock has risen almost ninefold since ChatGPT launched.
Why great news still crashed it
So why did a record quarter send the stock down about 13% in a single day, wiping out close to $280 billion, around ₹27 lakh crore.
Because the market had already priced in perfection. Its software arm missed. One customer hit a financing snag. And only six customers drive most of the AI growth, which is a real risk if even one slows.
That is the honest tension. Broadcom is a rare business trading on very high hopes. When you buy hope, you have to keep clearing the bar, quarter after quarter.
The most interesting company in the AI story is often the one you were not even looking at.
