NYSE
The NYSE is the New York Stock Exchange, started in 1792 when twenty four brokers agreed to trade only with each other. Most large, old American companies list here, it still runs a floor, and a designated market maker runs each stock's opening and closing auction. It is one of about twenty exchanges trading the same stock, so the price you see is one national number, not the NYSE's alone.
